Tips
- Empathy with the patient is paramount. You must want to understand the situation from the patient’s point of view. Avoid “Blame and Shame.”
- Develop Discrepancy: Help patient identify his/her current goal and contrast it with current behavior
- Roll with resistance. It can arise because you are assuming greater readiness to change than is the case or because you are asking the patient to examine something he/she does not want to talk to you about. However, resistance should not postpone change.
- Support Self-efficacy: Build patient self-confidence
